So my computer seems not to be strong enough to handle Duke very well but people have been playing constantly. Thoughts on the server? It restarts every 6 hours to help avoid problems the server has when running too long.

Enjoy!

I upgraded the server.  Cheesy I will test things out but I think I may make it restart every hour just to keep it fresh. It still doesn't seem very stable after a 3-4 hour period of heavy play.

Seems a lot better!!

Works good for me - How do you make it restart every hour.....i have the same problem with mine, runs like crap or crashes! I have a batch file to start it but seems like  you would have to exit the server properly then restart. And even then it doesnt always work.

Yea the whole running like crap and crashing is not on our end I don't think, but if you have the batch file you are half-way there.

Add this line before the startup command:

"taskkill /F /IM DukeForever.exe"

This will close the dedi before opening a new one. When you talk of it not always working, I get that too. You'll see it get stuck when it says something like "loading time -0.0567 seconds." I thought it might be because it was stopping and starting so fast, so I gave the batch another command. (A line below the kill command.)

"ping localhost -n 10"

This gives a simple ping for 10 seconds, allowing the dedi to shutdown properly all the way before starting back up. This didn't fix the negative load time problem, but if the dev team can manage to fix that little bug we should be in business.

As far as doing this every hour, in your Windows control panel you will see a scheduled tasks option. In that menu you can set it up to run the bath file at a certain time. You'll have to create a separate iteration for each specific time you want to restart. (Win XP(Youll make one for midnight, then every 1.5 hours afterward))

Hope this helps.

I get a steam error a lot "this game is currently unavailable please try again at another time." But if i kill steam.exe then run that batch file again, it will then start up.

I will add a taskkill for steam.exe and see if that will keep it up - And i think i read something that said you could install duke without steam but i didnt want the hassle.  I will start out running it every 6 hours and if i have issues i will cut it down, if i dont i will up till i get issues. Thanks for you help on the batch file.

O .......one more gripe, why on earth cant we chat at the end of the game (txt). I guess they assume people want to use microphones but come on i find it annoying to listen to someones tv in china, people coughing or feedback from a badly adjusted mic. during my game. They should include a command line switch to turn off the babble permanently! (just my opinion)

Gripe all i want but still love the game!

That is no good. I'm thinking what we originally started out with may be the best option, with a few hours of down time being the most it suffers. Maybe I'll take a look into some other options at some point, I've been getting lazy with it.
